So can Special Effects, Grandiose Computer generated landscapes, and Light Saber battles overcome abysmal acting propelled by dialog with wit and depth of a bazooka bubble gum comic. This critic is going to have to say ‘Not So Much’. While Clones is a better movie than Lucas’ first installment The Phantom Menace, which for anyone whose seen it knows that’s setting the bar pretty low.
Clones the second installment in the Star Wars Saga provides more insights into the Star War’s back story but the enlightenment is delivered in campy ways, that don’t propel the story at hand. A fast paced love story also provides no real character development except the fact that they are the parents of Luke and Lea, two characters unlike the leads of this film we will actually care about in 1978.
The screenplay seemed rushed and the brooding anger inside young Anakin is so apartment and deliberate you could choke on it. The opening action sequence through the CGI induced cityscape of flying cars is like a pod race at night and does not provide the dark or adult themed vision we would expect from the second installment.
Aside from some Crouching Tiger Hidden Yoda Light saber sword play the film leaves much to be desired. An Outer worldly gladiator arena fight scene is trite and poorly executed and had me wishing I was watching a Russell Crowe acceptance speech.
This film seems to be created more to line the pockets of George Lucas than provide any value for your entertainment dollar. Star Wars fan should and will see the film but the casual filmgoer should think twice before committing to the film. Booring CGI, a poor story and bad acting cannot save this movie from what it turned out to be, another dud in the Star Wars legacy.
